Club Strategy Update

Dear Member,

Along with the rest of society, the Club has been facing significant challenges in continuing to operate and providing opportunities to members and visitors to play tennis. However we are very pleased to see so many of you back on court since we were able to reopen.

All the staff are working incredibly hard to enable the the centre to operate in a “Covid Safe” manner and they appreciate your co-operation in following the necessary rules to keep everyone safe. These rules are based on the current government regulations and LTA guidance. The Management Committee would like to express their thanks to all the staff for their enthusiastic return to work, following an unsettling period on furlough.

Since March, the principal aims of the Management Committee has been the safety of members and staff and the long term survival of the Club. During Lockdown, the Committee focused on rigorous control of expenditure and applied for external support to conserve our funds. Once the outside courts reopened, we managed to operate with the staff still on Furlough which also helped to conserve funds. Now that the indoor centre is open, we are striving to balance the opportunity for members to play tennis and the need for the valuable income from external use of the facilities. This income is critical to the survival of the centre and we thank the members for their forbearance, in particular the short term use of Court 2 by the Plymouth Diving Club.

We are pleased to say that, based on current operations and assumptions, the Club is still in a relatively sound financial situation at the moment. Clearly we all hope that our activities don’t get curtailed again with further consequential adverse financial effects.

The 2019 formal accounts have been delayed for various Covid related reasons but are currently being produced by our Accountants. Once they are available, we will circulate them although they are less relevant to our current situation than the cash management measures in hand. We are considering how we will be able to hold an AGM - for example using an online format. This will be the opportunity to discuss with members, our plans for 2021. We are acutely aware of the Covid impact on members' tennis experience this year, particularly those who paid the supplemental fee for indoor club sessions. This will be considered in our planning for next year.

Before lockdown, we were engaged in a full strategic review with the support of the LTA. This was suspended in March but has now recommenced, in particular referencing the operation of other indoor centres. The current member survey is a fundamental part of this review and we urge all members to complete it. If you have not received the survey invitation, please check your junk box. If you still don’t receive it, please contact the club.

We would like to thank the LTA for the significant support they are providing and the suspension of the loan repayment due in July. We would also like to thank Sport England for their £4,000 grant to help us survive through lockdown.

Hopefully this gives you some idea on what is going on to sustain our club for the future.

As always, feedback and comments by members to the committee will be most welcome.

Best wishes

The Management Committee
