Club Mornings

Dear Members

We have been made aware that some members are unhappy with how we run club mornings. Having reviewed the situation this is what we have found the issues to be:

  • Some members arrive well before the start time of 10:00 and go on court to play an early game / warm up round
  • This means that they are disproportionately advantaged with extra play on indoor courts that they haven’t paid for, and that people who arrive at 10, do not get
  • This then has a knock-on effect for those who are rested first, because essentially they have already been playing 30 / 40 mins before the first game at 10 – so if 17 people turn up at 10, should one of them sit out? Some people think, yes, some people think not.
  • Other members of staff have been resting form the bottom, but that means that those members who arrived earlier are getting a lot more games than others but by arriving later, you could argue that some members are spreading the bottle neck of players across the whole morning.
  • Some members prefer playing on certain courts or with certain people.
  • The staff are merely there to facilitate play and to help everyone have a very enjoyable experience – with 25 people at each session, it will not always be possible for staff to give every member the exact playing experience that they want.

To clarify – Club mornings are a social mix in, which is randomised by the computer, which calculates who has already played together and endeavours to give you a range of different games with different people. That is with the exception of those who are rested. To ensure fair rest for everyone (hopefully only once per club session), we have to have a process because people do not all arrive at the same time, and this confuses the computer. Having consulted with the committee and staff, we have come up with the following process for all club sessions:

  • From now on, we have agreed that Club mornings will start at 9:30 on two courts at no extra cost – members will not be granted access to the courts before 9:30 as this is when the club morning will begin. This first round starting at 9:30 will finish at 10 – from then on the normal 20 min rounds will commence
  • If the third court is still free at 9:30 and you have more than 8 players, you can use the third court, but this decision will be made at 9:15 when it clearly has not been booked for any other reason.
  • If members arrive and go on at 9:30, their first game will be 9:30 and this will be counted as such
  • Members will be rested from the top down, not the bottom up. So if you arrive at 9:30, you can expect to be rested when the total of member hits 17.
  • Unless there is a major issue, the computer will randomly select players – and only manually amend to adjust which person/ people are resting.

We hope that this helps to explain how club mornings will work from now on. If you have any issues please do come to Paul or myself. The staff are there to do as we have asked them and cannot engage in debates about how the system works.

Many thanks

Lesley
