Update on re-opening

Dear Members,

In our email last week, we commented on the contrast between fitness classes and gyms being able to open on 2nd December whilst doubles from different family groups will not be permitted.

We have written to the LTA commenting on this unfairness and have received a detailed reply. In a nutshell, the guidance from the LTA is based on decisions made by the government. The LTA have argued for doubles to be permitted particularly highlighting the contrast but the government have not changed their mind. The LTA are continuing to press the case and mentioned that raising the issue locally with MPS could assist. All members might like to consider writing to their MPs on this point.

We have had to make a decision on allowing the various indoor classes at the Club to restart. Initially we were reluctant, as we considered the LTA advice against doubles, implied that larger number of people in fitness classes would not be permitted. This interpretation is incorrect. The LTA have confirmed that their advice is purely applicable to tennis activities. The government rules expressly permit fitness classes with appropriate social distancing. Accordingly, as the club needs the income and the courts are available, fitness classes will be permitted to resume.

We thought it important to explain the reasoning behind our decisions as it will probably seem as strange to members as it does to the Committee.

We hope that you are managing to get back to playing doubles outdoors and singles indoors.
