Two Devon Tennis clubs - a successful collaboration

Sharing the Tennis LOVE

Who said LOVE means nothing to a tennis player - Two Devon Tennis clubs are sharing the tennis LOVE with a successful collaboration. By working together and with the support of the Lawn Tennis Association they have successfully delivered tennis tasters in 9 primary schools and introduced over 1500 pupils to tennis.

In November The South Devon Tennis Centre and Plympton Tennis Club (part of the Tennis Network), spent a week visiting primary schools in the Plympton and Ivybridge area with LTA National Senior Performance Coach Phil Leighton. During the sessions the children were introduced to tennis and offered a flyer to attend a free roadshow at the South Devon Tennis Centre that weekend.

Paul Butcher, Head of Tennis and Sport at the South Devon Tennis Centre said: “We were incredibly honoured to be offered the chance to run an LTA National Roadshow by the LTA for a second time (the club ran one in 2019). The LTA only offer the roadshows to clubs who consistently demonstrate growth in their junior programme and have a track record of good quality coaching. Last year we were given “LTA Youth Recognised Venue” status. When we were offered the roadshow, we instantly thought to include our neighbours and colleagues in Plympton because we have been working with them on growing the local tennis talent pool of young players.”

Jane Yilmaz, Lead Coach from the Tennis Network who is working out of Plympton Tennis Club said: “We were delighted to collaborate on this initiative. Working from smaller clubs I can see the benefit of working with larger centres like South Devon. There is the sharing of resources and training for our coaches and the increased opportunities for our young players to play with more children of different standards. I look forward to continuing this relationship into the future”

The Roadshow was a huge success with over 290 children attending alongside their parents and siblings. At the roadshow the children experienced more aspects of tennis and were offered a 6 week course starting in January which included a free racket and T Shirt.

Now the new year is in fully swing there are 114 children taking part in the 6 week taster courses across both venues in Plympton and Ivybridge. This is an incredible number of new children now beginning their tennis journey in our area.

Kim Eschbaecher, LTA Delivery Manager for the South West said: “I am delighted to see these two clubs working together. We have a unique opportunity here to significantly increase the number of children playing tennis in Plympton and Ivybridge. Both clubs are growing with volunteers and coaches spearheading this growth in tennis, a staggering 23 Tennis Leaders from both clubs volunteered at the roadshow.

“The LTA are continuing to support this drive locally with our LTA Youth Schools Programme providing local primary and secondary schools with extensive resources, online teacher training and exclusive offers.”

The School Programme consists of free face to face primary teacher training course to be offered as part of our wider collaboration with local schools, coaches, tennis venues and the LTA. The 2h CPD will enhance teachers knowledge and understanding of how to deliver fun and engaging tennis lessons to a large, mixed ability group in a small space, remembering that most primary schools do not have access to tennis courts.
